THE LAB

Build your venture, make connections, secure investment, and scale.

The Kinjani Lab supports 30 science-driven African founders building climate solutions across critical supply-chain sectors, helping them move from validation and early traction to investment readiness.

It provides hands-on venture-building support across Science, Business, and People, including technical validation through techno-economic and life cycle assessment, founder coaching, and introductions to industrial customers and capital partners.

The Lab is designed for ventures tackling climate challenges in hard-to-transition sectors such as restorative mining & minerals, regenerative land & crop systems, water & marine economies, waste treatment & circular materials, data-driven biology & frontier innovation.

Most science-led climate ventures in Africa do not fail because the science is weak or the business model is flawed. The challenge usually lies in the translation between the two. The science works, but the commercial pathway is not yet defined.

The business model makes sense in theory, but the science has not yet been validated in real-world conditions. And the founder is carrying sustained pressure across technical, commercial, and personal dimensions.

At Kinjani Lab, we focus on the intersection of three core pillars: Science, Business, and People.

Investability = Scientific Proof + Commercial Pull + Founder Execution Capacity.

Build all three, and you unlock the path from proof to traction to investment to impact.

Kinjani Lab is a selective venture programme supporting 30 science-driven founders building climate solutions across Southern Africa’s critical supply-chain sectors, including restorative mining and minerals, regenerative land and crop systems, water and marine economies, waste and circular materials, and data-driven biology and frontier innovation.

We are embedded alongside you, with:

  • $15K to $30K returnable grants, non-dilutive and interest-free

  • Expert support to build your techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment to investor-grade standard

  • Dedicated founder support through a nature retreat and leadership coaching

  • Intentional introductions to industrial customers and co-development partners

At the beginning of the Lab cycle, we map your starting point across Science, Business, and People, and work alongside you to build a compelling investment case grounded in evidence.

Commercialisation of existing tech:

For founders turning validated science into commercially viable climate ventures.

Scientist-founders, technical leads, university spin-outs, and deep domain experts ready to move from proof to market.

New product within existing business:

For operators building a new science-driven climate product within an existing company.

Industry leaders, business owners, and applied innovators with the operational experience to bring it to life.

Scaling existing solution:

For climate ventures with early traction, prepare for disciplined growth and follow-on investment.

Pre-seed or seed-stage founders with operational and commercial momentum.

Stage 1: Light Application / Mandate Fit Screen

Applicants complete a short form. The Kinjani will then apply a filter across four parameters: sector, stage, geography, and science-led.

Stage 2: Detailed Application / Selection Criteria Assessment

Shortlisted ventures will then complete a deep-dive application. Where we will unpack each venture across our three pillars: venture (business model & market; innovation & differentiation); science (technology and climate impact); and people (team, capability and programme fit).

Stage 3: Initial Interviews / Validation & Clarification

This is a 15-minute structured conversation with the venture. We will be deep diving into the notes made in the Stage 2 notes.

Stage 4: Panel Presentation & Q&A / Final Assessment

The founder presents to a selection panel. 10-minute structured presentation followed by 25–30 minutes of Q&A. All shortlisted ventures will then be contacted.
